Vegetarian Restaurants Counter Obesity in New York City

When you picture what the average American looks like, what image comes to mind?

Not only are adults increasingly becoming overweight, but children are as well.

Close to 40 percent of children in New York City public schools are either overweight or obese. Nutritionists believe that it’s in part a result of a diet high in sugary drinks and fatty foods.

Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson are attempting to forbid the use of food stamps to buy sugary drinks in NYC as a result. The goal is to counteract obesity and to hinder children from establishing unhealthy dietary habits.

San Francisco has recently made childhood obesity a priority by implementing Prop. 19 and outlawing restaurants from including toys with meals that contain too much fat and sugar.

If you’re interested in changing your diet and want to try eating at a healthy vegetarian restaurant or juice bar, check out this map pick a place to have dinner tonight.

So America, do you want to be known as the land of the free or of the fat?
